Camera Assignment - 6 shots

Cinema Korea 2014
Shooting Exercise with the DSLR camera
6-shots

Due Thursday, July 3rd at 9am

The core idea behind this assignment is for each student to learn how the DSLR camera and the Zoom microphones work. It is an opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with the equipment. This page describes the DSLR camera assignment.

It is a requirement of this class that each student learns the functionality of the equipment. Each student must submit their own work. Submitting work of other students is not acceptable.  It is acceptable for you to work in groups or pairs, the assignments must be the work of each individual for this assignment.

Capture 6 video shots.  Each shot should be about 8-10 seconds long.

2 shots that convey shallow depth of field
2 shots that convey available light
2 shots that convey composition, the rule of thirds

The shots you make for the assignment should exemplify these attributes.  There is no right or wrong answer. The criteria is whether or not you have achieved the goal for each shot.

Please see the examples of these shots on the blog.

Shooting tips:

1. Take your time
2. Use the tripod (required).
3. Make sure your camera is on the correct setting.  The movie setting for video recording. 24 FPS of frames per second, 1920 HD.
4. Experiment with manual or automatic focus.  You will need manual focus for the depth of field assignment.
5. Keep track of your shots, take notes in a notebook. Take more shots than you need and then select the best ones.

Bring your shots on your SD card to class. If you are able to download them, go ahead and do that, however I will show you how to download the files in class on Monday. If you download them, you should label them with your name and the type of shot. As an example: “chungys-depth1.jpg:, “chungys-composition1.jpg” or “chungys-light1.jpg”

Please take care of the equipment.  Do not mix equipment from one bag to the other.
